Organic
Waste Management Facility
With plenty of energy and essential nutrients in the large amounts of food waste produced each day by households, restaurants and food industries, our new biogas plant in South Hertfordshire will extract energy from all food waste, while ensuring that the nutrients are recycled for agricultural land.
About Our Anaerobic Digestion Facility
Willen Biogas has a professionally built and operated food waste fed Anaerobic Digestion facility based on our farm in South Hertfordshire, located 15 miles north of Piccadilly Circus. With easy access to major road networks, we can accommodate all sizes of vehicles. Our collection rounds pick up caddies of food waste from retailers and end users, alongside full articulated lorries servicing bulking facilities and larger producers of food wastes in the supply chain, as well as primary food producers.
Through various independent analysis and professional bodies it has now been stated that food waste is one of the biggest contributors to greenhouse gas and Carbon dioxide emissions in the world. To give proportionality, if food waste emissions were measured as a continent it would be the third biggest emitter in the world behind America and China. As a country the United Kingdom produces approximately 7 million tonnes of food waste per annum and only 18-20% of that is processed in facilities like ours. It is our responsibility to handle food waste properly and responsibly and now the whole process could not be easier, as one call to Willen Biogas Ltd is all it needs to set in motion the answer to your food wastes from transporting to processing and utilising backend processed material.
Positively Impacting Our Environment
Our Organic Waste Management Facility
At Willen Biogas Ltd we can take in your packaged food waste or naked food waste, depending on the type of waste you wish to be processed. We can de-package the material automatically, ensuring the residual waste is put to good use somewhere else. Once the inorganic material is removed, we make the organic food waste fraction into a liquid consistency to be able to be pumped around the plant automatically.
Making the Most Out Of Organic Waste
Once the incoming processed material or substrate has had the packaging removed, it is pasteurised at 70 degrees centigrade for an hour. Once that heating process has been verified by continual automatic process monitoring, the material moves into the digesters. The pasteurised material stays in the primary digester releasing methane via a biological process called Anaerobic Digestion. The methane is captured and pumped and cleaned naturally from sulphurs, so as not to emit any emissions from the onsite generators engine. The generator is powered entirely from the methane fuelled engine and produces enough electricity to power approximately 3,500 houses with clean green renewable energy, not reliant on fossil fuel or climate damaging sources, protecting our planet with Greener Energy for Future Generations!
Recyclable, Sustainable, Biodegradable Energy
The material that comes off the back of the process once all the methane has been extracted is called digestate, this is a natural nutrient rich fertiliser which has passed a statutory legislation to make it achieve a product status called PAS110. This fertiliser is spread on our own farm land and helps reduce our reliance on man-made fertilisers making the growing of arable crops and cereals that we deliver locally to the food chain. This is far more natural and a step away from using man-made fertilisers and chemicals.
Our Process For Environmental Change
Anaerobic Digestion (AD) is a process of waste vegetable matter or biodegradable material decomposing in an airtight vessel. Anaerobic bacteria digest the product resulting in methane gas, which is then used to create renewable energy. Our technology is particularly suited to the task of producing renewable energy, equipped with a pre-treatment facility that sorts plastic residues from organic waste.

Want To Be A Part Of Our
Responsible Waste Journey?
What is not to like about Anaerobic Digestion? It is a responsible way to handle your food wastes, turning the waste product into renewable electricity. This avoids the reliance on other sensitive factors and the end product is then utilised as a nutrient source for growing crops.
However large or small your food waste volumes may be, please call Willen Biogas and speak to one of our friendly, helpful team members who will assist you all the way with processing your material and respecting the environment.
